Search the directoryPsychological birth trauma affects around one in five women after birth, and preventing it is described in the research as a global priority. Debriefing your birth with a midwife is a recognised part of postnatal care, and it now has a formal definition: a conversation led by the birthing person, emotionally safe, using therapeutic communication and midwifery expertise, to help you reflect on your birth and find meaning in it.
A birth debrief is not therapy, and it isn't a replacement for it. The two sit alongside each other.
