A kind, unhurried walk back through what happened, to help you to process your birth. A one-on-one conversation to allow you to tell your story with someone who understands the physiology surrounding childbirth, to help you to make sense of your birth.
The experience of birth has a life long and profound impact on a person. A debrief, usually performed by a midwife or obstetrician, can walk through the clinical timeline and potential reasoning behind decisions made, while also making space for emotional processing. It gives you the chance to ask questions that you didn't get to ask at the time, and to fill gaps in memory that are common after a stressful or fast-moving birth. Debriefs are often offered after a difficult or unexpected birth, but can be valuable after any birth.
Why it helps
Debriefing your birth with a midwife is a recognised part of postnatal care, and it has a definition: a conversation led by the birthing person, emotionally safe, using midwifery expertise to help you reflect on your birth and find meaning in it.
Buchanan et al. (2025), Midwife-led birth debrief: a concept analysis, Midwifery 151.
A birth debrief is not therapy, and it isn't a replacement for it. The two sit alongside each other. Where else to get help.
