The muscles, ligaments and fascia of the pelvis hold tension like any other tissue in the body. This work aims to release tension, whether to prepare the space for birth or to assist with tension or discomfort.

Internal release work is a hands-on technique used to gently release tension in the soft tissues of the pelvis, including the ligaments, muscles, and fascia that surround the pelvic bones. This is performed by some midwives, osteopaths and physiotherapists. I was trained and mentored in this bodywork initially by Fiona Hallinan of The Pelvic Space. It's performed internally, allowing access to tissue connections that can't be reached externally.
The goal is to help the pelvis move more freely and symmetrically, which can support labour, ease pregnancy discomfort, or help resolve tension carried from a previous birth. It's also suited to anyone experiencing pelvic pain outside of pregnancy, as the same tension in the pelvic soft tissues can contribute to ongoing discomfort regardless of whether you're pregnant.
It's often paired with education on pelvic anatomy and self-care techniques so the release isn't a one-off, but something you can continue to support yourself.
This 2 hour education and hands-on session is suitable for pregnant women and birthing people preparing for birth, as well as anyone experiencing pelvic pain outside of pregnancy. It includes:
